Lady Gaga is Stefani Germanotta, a New Yorker who trained on piano and played the downtown club circuit before her first singles turned into international hits. The early material was dance-pop built on hard synth hooks, delivered with costuming and staging that got as much attention as the songs.

Since then she has moved between modes: rock and country textures on one record, a set of jazz standards recorded with Tony Bennett, and a return to four-on-the-floor dance production. She also took the lead role in A Star Is Born, and co-wrote its music.
