Son Rompe Pera
Marimba cumbia played with punk hands — a family band that keeps the tradition intact and then hits it a lot harder than tradition requires.
Son Rompe Pera is a group from Naucalpan, in the State of Mexico, built around the Gama brothers, who learned marimba from their father and play it alongside electric guitar, bass and drums. Their music takes cumbia and other Latin American dance forms and plays them with the volume and attack of garage punk, keeping the marimba at the centre of the arrangement rather than treating it as decoration. Active since the late 2010s, they have become associated with a wider revival of interest in Mexican street and party music.
