Los Hermanos Flores
A Salvadoran institution since the 1960s — big-band cumbia that has soundtracked several generations of Central American parties, horns and all.
Los Hermanos Flores is a Salvadoran orquesta founded in the 1960s around bandleader Francisco Flores and his brothers, based in San Salvador. The group works in the large-ensemble tradition of Latin dance bands, with a full horn section, percussion battery and multiple vocalists, applying that format to cumbia along with other tropical dance styles.
Over decades the band became one of the best-known live acts in El Salvador and among Salvadoran communities abroad, particularly in the United States, where its repertoire is a fixture at weddings, fiestas patronales and community dances. Its arrangements favour brass-heavy, high-tempo cumbia built for dancing rather than listening, and the group has continued performing with a rotating cast of musicians well beyond its early years.
