The Verve Pipe formed in East Lansing, Michigan, in the early 1990s, built around singer and songwriter Brian Vander Ark. After building a following in the Michigan club circuit, the band signed to RCA and reached a wide audience with the album Villains, whose single "The Freshmen" became a fixture on American rock radio in 1997.
