'What's Up?' — one enormous, unavoidable song and a Linda Perry vocal nobody has managed to imitate since, reunited so a whole field can scream the hey-yeah-yeahs together.
4 Non Blondes formed in San Francisco in 1989, with Linda Perry on lead vocals and guitar, Christa Hillhouse on bass and Roger Rocha on guitar, alongside drummer Dawn Richardson. The band released a single album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, in 1992, and its single "What's Up?" became an international hit carried largely by Perry's raw, unmistakable vocal.
The group broke up in the mid-1990s, after which Perry moved into songwriting and production for other artists. Their music sits in the loose, blues-inflected end of early-1990s alternative rock, and the band has reunited on occasion since.
