Bay Area hyperpop auteur — glitchy, hooky, scene-defining, 'Wallsocket' worldbuilding included, internet-native songwriting at its sharpest.

underscores is April Harper Grey, born Devon Karpf in San Francisco in 2000. She began posting dubstep music under the name at thirteen on SoundCloud, then spent several years releasing EPs between 2018 and 2020 that pulled in jazz and future bass before settling into the sound now associated with the project.

She rose to attention with her 2021 debut album Fishmonger, a hyperpop and rock-influenced record that led to a companion EP and a support slot on tour with 100 Gecs that same year. Her first headlining tour followed in early 2022.

The music combines distorted, glitch-heavy production with conventional pop and rock songwriting, drawing on breakbeats, pop-punk guitars and heavily processed vocals in roughly equal measure.

Wallsocket, released in 2023 on Mom + Pop Music, is built around a set of characters in a fictional Michigan town and was promoted with an alternate reality game alongside a tour of North America and Europe. It pushed the project further toward guitar-driven arrangements without abandoning the digital clutter of earlier work.

A third album, U, followed in March 2026 to critical acclaim, and Grey is set to open on tour for Charli XCX later that year.
