Zhu is the project of Steven Zhu, an American producer, singer and DJ who grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He first drew attention around 2014 while releasing music anonymously, and the deep house track "Faded" became his breakout, followed by wider recognition for his production and remix work.
His music draws on deep and tech house, bass-leaning club sounds and elements of funk and soul, usually built around his own smoky falsetto vocals. The Zhu presentation has stayed deliberately shadowed, with silhouetted photography and dim, heavily designed lighting in performance. Live, he works with a band and saxophone alongside electronics, pushing the recorded material into longer, darker arrangements.
