Avatar formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in the early 2000s, beginning in the melodic death metal tradition of their home city before broadening into groove metal and more theatrical, avant-garde territory. Vocalist Johannes Eckerström fronts the band in costume and face paint, adopting a ringmaster persona that shapes both their artwork and their stage presentation.
Their later records lean on circus and carnival imagery, mixing heavy riffing with vaudevillian flourishes and clean-sung passages. The band has toured extensively outside Sweden and is known primarily as a live act, with performances built around Eckerström's showmanship as much as the music.
