Brujeria
Masked, Spanish-language deathgrind long assembled from members of other well-known metal bands — cartel imagery and blunt political satire at grindcore speed.
Brujeria formed in Los Angeles in 1989 as a masked, pseudonymous project drawing its personnel from established metal bands, with members performing under assumed Spanish-language identities rather than their own names. Dino Cazares of Fear Factory and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys were among the musicians involved in the early lineups, though the group's shifting membership has always been part of the concept.
The music combines death metal and grindcore, delivered almost entirely in Spanish, with lyrics that mix Satanic and brujería imagery, drug-trade narratives, gore and blunt political commentary on US–Mexico border politics and immigration. Brujeria's presentation — bandanas, machetes and deliberately lurid artwork — has drawn censorship and controversy over the years, and the band remains known as much for that provocation as for its speed and heaviness.
