Carcass
Liverpool extremists who began in grindcore squalor and ended up writing some of the sharpest melodic riffs death metal has produced — decades on, still gleefully clinical.
Carcass formed in Liverpool in 1985 around guitarist Bill Steer, bassist and vocalist Jeff Walker and drummer Ken Owen, and signed to Earache Records. Their first albums, buried in distortion and named with medical-dictionary relish, are foundational to goregrind, while Necroticism and 1993's Heartwork sharpened the same material into precise, melodic death metal that influenced a generation of bands, particularly in Sweden.
The group split in the mid-1990s after the more rock-oriented Swansong, then reformed in 2007 and has released further albums since, with Walker and Steer at the centre. The lyrical fixation on anatomy and decay remains, delivered with the same detached, faintly clinical humour.
