Omnichord hymns from rural Virginia — luminous, homespun minimalism, songs that glow like lamplight through gauze.

Lael Neale grew up on a farm in rural Virginia before moving to Los Angeles. In April 2020, at the start of the pandemic, she left the city and returned to the family farm, where she wrote and recorded steadily for two years, working alone and out of step with the world around her.

She has made four albums. The first, I'll Be Your Man, came out in 2015 on Liberal Arts. After signing to Sub Pop she released Acquainted with Night in 2021, Star Eaters Delight in 2023, and Altogether Stranger in 2025, all built from voice, Suzuki Omnichord, and tape, with Guy Blakeslee helping produce and adding instruments.

The Omnichord's drifting chords and preset rhythms give the songs a droning, hymn-like frame, while Neale sings in an unhurried, conversational register. The arrangements stay sparse, and the recordings keep the hiss and room sound of their making, which is a large part of what the music is.

In 2022 she released the song "Hotline," which Paste magazine named one of the best new songs of the year, a rare moment of outside notice for a body of work made mostly in isolation.
