Maribou State
Warm, live-instrument house that leans soul rather than club — the kind of set that works equally well at golden hour and at three in the morning.
Maribou State are Chris Davids and Liam Ivory, who met as teenagers in Hertfordshire and began releasing music together in the early 2010s. Their productions sit between house, downtempo and soul, favouring live instrumentation, guitar and keyboard parts and guest vocals over sample-led club construction.
The duo's debut album, Portraits, established that approach and featured recurring vocal contributions from Holly Walker; the follow-up, Kingdoms in Colour, drew on field recordings and instruments gathered while travelling. They perform both as a DJ pairing and with an expanded live band, and have also built up a substantial body of remix work for other artists.
