Matt Maeson

1 festival played

A gravelled voice and songs shaped by a genuinely unusual upbringing playing prison ministry shows — redemption-arc folk with radio-sized choruses.

Matt Maeson is a singer and songwriter from Virginia Beach, Virginia, with a rough, low-set voice that carries most of his arrangements. He grew up in a family involved in prison ministry and spent part of his teens performing in prisons and at religious events, an experience that shaped much of the writing on his early releases. His songs pair folk-leaning acoustic structures with contemporary pop production, and tracks such as "Cringe" and "Hallucinogenics" brought him to a wider audience through alternative radio and streaming. His debut album, Bank on the Funeral, appeared in 2019.
