Pennywise formed in Hermosa Beach, California in 1988, part of the South Bay scene that fed into the wider melodic hardcore boom of the 1990s. The band signed to Epitaph Records early on and built a catalogue of fast, tightly played punk rock built around Fletcher Dragge's guitar and gang-vocal choruses.
Bassist and founding member Jason Thirsk died in 1996; "Bro Hymn" was later reworked as a tribute to him and has stayed the group's most recognisable song. Singer Jim Lindberg left in 2009 and returned a few years later, and the band has continued recording and touring with a lineup rooted in its original members.
