The Darling Buds

1 festival played

Newport indie-pop group from the late-eighties C86 aftermath, pairing bright guitar jangle with Andrea Lewis's unmistakable vocal.

The Darling Buds formed in Newport, south Wales, in 1986, with Andrea Lewis on vocals and Harley Farr on guitar. They emerged in the wake of the C86 cassette and the indie-pop scene around it, and were among the groups from that world that moved to a major label, signing to CBS after early independent singles.

Their debut album Pop Said... arrived in 1989, following the single Hit the Ground, and further records through the early 1990s pushed towards a fuller, more produced guitar sound. The band's music is characterised by fast, bright chord playing and short pop structures, with Lewis's clear, high vocal carrying the melody.
