Mongolian group welding throat singing and horsehead fiddle to heavy riffs, a sound they call hunnu rock — steppe tradition at stadium volume.
The HU are a Mongolian band formed in Ulaanbaatar in 2016 by producer Dashka with a core line-up of Gala, Jaya, Enkush and Temka. Their sound combines Mongolian throat singing with traditional instruments — the morin khuur, or horsehead fiddle, along with the tovshuur lute and jaw harp — set against distorted guitars and heavy drums. The band calls the style hunnu rock, referencing the Hunnu empire, and their lyrics draw on Mongolian history, warrior imagery and folk poetry, sung in Mongolian. Videos for their early singles "Yuve Yuve Yu" and "Wolf Totem" spread widely online and brought them an international audience well outside the usual metal circuit.
