Cree and Salish singer weaving Indigenous roots into warm folk-pop and R&B — powwow-honed vocals in a new frame.
Tia Wood grew up at Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Alberta in a family steeped in powwow music: her father Earl Wood sings with the round dance group Northern Cree, and her older sister Fawn Wood is also a recording artist. That upbringing shaped her phrasing and vocal power long before she moved into a pop setting.
She first reached a wider audience on TikTok, posting short videos that reworked familiar songs with Indigenous vocal styling folded into them. The clips drew attention well beyond Canada and led to her signing with Sony Music Canada, becoming the first Indigenous woman signed to that label.
Her music blends folk-pop and R&B, treating powwow-rooted vocal technique as part of the melody rather than a decorative flourish layered on top.
Her debut EP, Pretty Red Bird, came out on Sony in September 2024 and earned her a nomination for Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year at the 2025 Juno Awards.
Wood has also worked with the REDress Project, an initiative that uses art, dance and music to raise awareness of missing and murdered Indigenous women.
