Alan Walker was born in 1997 in Northampton, England, to a Norwegian mother and a British father, and grew up in Bergen, Norway. He taught himself production on a laptop, drawing on tutorials and music he found online, and began circulating tracks through YouTube and SoundCloud while still a teenager. An early instrumental released via the NoCopyrightSounds channel was later reworked with vocals and became his breakthrough.
His music leans on clean synth leads, simple piano-derived motifs and vocal hooks, sitting between progressive house and pop. Later releases such as "Alone", "Sing Me to Sleep", "Darkside" and "On My Way" followed a similar approach, often built around guest singers rather than his own voice, and he has released full-length records including Different World. On stage and in videos he appears masked, and his audience is known collectively as Walkers.
