Louis The Child
Chicago duo making dance music that smiles — playful future bass with pop instincts.
Robby Hauldren and Freddy Kennett grew up attending New Trier High School in the Chicago suburbs, Hauldren DJing under the name Haul Pass and Kennett producing as Fatboy before they met at a Madeon concert in 2012. They picked their duo name using Wikipedia's random-article button after recording their first track together at Kennett's house.
Their sound sits in future bass: bright synth chords, pitched vocal samples and melodic drops built around pop song structures and guest singers rather than extended club edits.
The 2015 single "It's Strange" broke the duo through, drawing praise from Taylor Swift, appearing on the FIFA 16 soundtrack and later soundtracking a Nissan Kicks advert. Off the back of it they opened for Madeon and The Chainsmokers before launching their own headline tour, starting in Chicago that October.
Later singles kept the momentum going: "Go" turned up in an Apple iPad Pro commercial, the pair teamed with rapper Pell as the side project Pellican Child, and "Better Not," featuring Wafia, passed 100 million streams within a year of release.
