Bright Eyes
Conor Oberst's trembling opus — the confessional songbook of a generation, from basement-tape quiver to orchestral sprawl and back.
Bright Eyes began after singer-songwriter Conor Oberst's earlier band, Commander Venus, broke up in 1997. He gathered the songs he had been stockpiling into the project's first album, A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997, released the following year on Saddle Creek Records, the Omaha label co-founded by his brother Justin Oberst and future Bright Eyes producer Mike Mogis.
The band became one of the defining acts of the Saddle Creek label and of early-2000s American indie folk, built around Oberst alongside multi-instrumentalist Nate Walcott and producer Mike Mogis. Oberst's unsteady, high-strung voice and densely worded songs about doubt, politics and private wreckage set the tone for the catalogue that followed.
Letting Off the Happiness, from 1998, was recorded largely on an analog eight-track reel-to-reel in the Oberst family basement, with guest musicians from Lullaby for the Working Class, Neutral Milk Hotel and of Montreal passing through the sessions.
Arrangements across the catalogue have ranged from lo-fi acoustic recordings to full-band rock, country instrumentation and electronic experiments, with Nate Walcott's horn and string charts a recurring feature. The band released records through Saddle Creek from 1998 to 2011 before going on hiatus for most of the 2010s.
Bright Eyes resumed activity in January 2020 after signing with Dead Oceans, returning to recording and touring together. Their most recent album, Five Dice, All Threes, followed in September 2024, extending a catalogue built up over more than two decades.
