American deathrock's origin point — blasphemy, theatre, and guitars soaked in reverb, carrying the 'Only Theatre of Pain' legacy forward.

Christian Death formed in Claremont, California, in 1979, when singer Rozz Williams joined guitarist John "Jay" Albert, bassist James McGearty and drummer George Belanger. The band began as a straightforward punk outfit indebted to groups like the Germs, before its sound slowed and took on increasingly religious and macabre imagery.

After early lineup turmoil, Williams was joined by guitarist Rikk Agnew of the Adolescents, with McGearty and Belanger still on bass and drums. This lineup recorded the 1982 debut Only Theatre of Pain, blending punk urgency with reverb-heavy guitar, macabre imagery and lyrics that drew on religious iconography for provocation. The album is now treated as the point where American deathrock became distinct from British goth, and it influenced peers such as Kommunity FK and 45 Grave.

After Only Theatre of Pain the lineup fell apart, and guitarist Valor Kand, who had been touring with the band Pompeii 99, joined Williams on vocals and guitar for 1984's Catastrophe Ballet. Following the album Ashes in 1985, Williams left the band entirely, leaving Kand as frontperson with no founding members remaining, a change that has divided the group's fanbase ever since.

Valor Kand has kept using the Christian Death name since, fronting later versions of the band. Williams died in 1998, and the group's early records remain reference points for goth and deathrock bands that followed.
