Deicide formed in Florida in 1987 and became one of the defining bands of the American death metal scene that grew up around Tampa. The group is fronted by bassist and vocalist Glen Benton, whose low growls and openly anti-Christian lyrics have been central to the band's identity and controversy since the beginning; drummer Steve Asheim has also been present throughout.

Musically the band works in blunt, fast death metal — blast beats, tremolo riffing and tightly compressed songs — and their early records are widely treated as foundational to the genre. They have continued recording and touring across decades of lineup changes around the core pairing.
