Toronto rapper and singer who made the sung-rapped hook standard, moving between dancehall, Memphis rap and late-night confessional over a decade of chart dominance.

Drake was born Aubrey Graham in Toronto in 1986 and acted on the Canadian teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation before releasing mixtapes. So Far Gone, from 2009, set the template that most of his career has followed: rapping and singing traded back and forth across the same track, often over the muted, reverb-heavy production of longtime collaborator Noah "40" Shebib.

He has borrowed steadily from other scenes, including dancehall, UK road rap, Memphis and Afrobeats, and his features and guest verses have made him a fixture on other artists' records. He runs the OVO label and clothing line, and much of his output is tied to Toronto.
