Ora Cogan
West-coast gothic folk — spectral voice over darkwave undertow, songs that flicker like candlelight in a drafty room.
Ora Cogan grew up on a wave-beaten island in the Salish Sea before leaving home at fifteen to apprentice as a silversmith. She later moved through Vancouver's noise and experimental music scene, then stepped away from music altogether for a period to work in environmental justice and human rights photojournalism, before returning to songwriting and guitar.
Based on the west coast of British Columbia, she has released records steadily since the late 2000s, moving from sparse folk toward fuller arrangements that draw on dream pop, shoegaze and darker post-punk textures. Her writing favours modal melodies, reverb-heavy guitar and a high, drifting vocal that sits inside the arrangement rather than over it.
Her fourth album, Hard Hearted Woman, released on Sacred Bones, grew out of cold-water plunges, long river swims, late-night conversations about art and politics, and drives through the Lillooet landscape to visit her godmother. It continues in the gothic, atmospheric direction her recent work has taken.
Ora Cogan has toured widely, often solo or with small backing configurations, carrying that same spare, atmospheric approach onto stages far from where the songs were written.
