Baltimore band fronted by Ashrita Kumar, whose pop-punk hooks keep giving way to hardcore screaming. Met as students, kept the urgency.

Kumar and Vallejo met at Johns Hopkins University in 2018 and began writing songs together as Sugar Crisis, releasing the demo 'Mars' in 2019. Looking for a drummer, the pair waited outside a campus practice room until they found Myron Houngbedji, and the group renamed itself Pinkshift, after the astronomical phenomenon.

A bassist, Erich Weinroth, joined after Kumar and Vallejo advertised on the dating app Tinder, but he left the band in December 2021 over musical and cultural differences, leaving Pinkshift as the trio of Kumar, Vallejo and Houngbedji.

The band's debut single, 'On Thin Ice', appeared in March 2020. Its follow-up, 'i'm gonna tell my therapist on you', went viral on Reddit that July and found an audience well beyond Baltimore's DIY shows, drawing support from punk musicians including Anti-Flag's Chris #2.

The EP Saccharine followed in 2021, and the band signed to Hopeless Records, releasing the debut album Love Me Forever in 2022. Kumar's lyrics deal in rage, burnout and being read as an outsider, sung in a voice that moves from clean melody to a full scream inside a single line, over songs that stay short and fast live.

Pinkshift released a second EP, Suraksha, in 2023 and toured opening for Pussy Riot, the Gaslight Anthem and the Linda Lindas. Their second album, Earthkeeper, arrived in 2025. The band, whose members are ethnically diverse, has used its platform to speak on racial justice, Palestine and gender inclusivity, with Kumar identifying as non-binary.
