Slick Rick, born Richard Walters in London and raised in the Bronx, is one of hip-hop's foundational narrative rappers. He first appeared alongside Doug E. Fresh on 'The Show' and 'La Di Da Di' in 1985, then released The Great Adventures of Slick Rick in 1988, which included 'Children's Story' and 'Hey Young World'.
His delivery is conversational and unhurried, often using different voices for characters, and his verses tend to be built as complete stories. Blind in one eye since infancy, he performs wearing an eyepatch and heavy gold jewellery. His records remain among the most sampled and quoted in rap.
