Multilingual Mumbai hip-hop collective rapping in Marathi, Hindi and more, with protest politics and tribal percussion in the beats.
Swadesi came out of the Mumbai street-rap scene of the mid-2010s, a crew rather than a solo name, with MC Mawali and 100 RBH among the voices on record. Their best-known track, "Warli Revolt", was made with Warli artist and activist Prakash Bhoir and took up the fight over the felling of trees in Aarey Colony for a metro car shed, pairing Warli tarpa and percussion with verses in Marathi.
The group lost one of its rappers, Tod Fod, in 2020. Live, Swadesi lean on the same mix that shaped the records: hard, dry beats behind rapid Marathi and Hindi verses, and lyrics tied to land, caste and the city's displaced neighbourhoods.
