Switchfoot

1 festival played

San Diego rock band who spent the late nineties as a Christian-market act before crossing over to mainstream radio — 'Dare You to Move' still carries the room.

Switchfoot began in San Diego in the late 1990s around brothers Jon Foreman, who sings and plays guitar, and bassist Tim Foreman, with drummer Chad Butler; the band later expanded with Jerome Fontamillas and guitarist Drew Shirley. Their first records were released through a Christian label, and their audience widened considerably after several songs appeared in the 2002 film A Walk to Remember.

The album that followed, The Beautiful Letdown, moved them to a major label and produced the singles "Meant to Live" and "Dare You to Move," both fixtures on mainstream rock radio. The sound is melodic alternative rock with post-grunge weight, built around Jon Foreman's lyrics, which tend toward questions of faith, doubt and restlessness without settling into a single camp. The band has continued releasing albums steadily since, and its members remain closely tied to San Diego's surf community.
