'90s space-rock that everyone else spent decades catching up to — heavy in texture rather than tempo, 'Fantastic Planet' the cult document.

Failure formed in Los Angeles around 1990 and were led by Ken Andrews and Greg Edwards, who shared writing, singing and instrumental duties. Across three albums in the 1990s the band moved from a heavier alternative rock sound toward the dense, atmospheric approach of 1996's Fantastic Planet, a record that found a considerable cult audience after the group had already broken up. Their music is characterised by detuned guitars, layered production and slow, deliberate tempos, an approach often described as space rock and frequently cited by later bands. Failure reunited in the 2010s and have continued to record and tour since.
