Wild Nothing

Jack Tatum's reverb-soaked '80s indie-pop, which has aged much better than the chillwave label it arrived with — 'Shadow' still shimmering.

Wild Nothing is the project of Jack Tatum, who began recording it in Blacksburg, Virginia, while a student at Virginia Tech. The debut album Gemini arrived in 2010 and set the template: layered guitars, soft vocals set low in the mix, and melodies that borrow openly from 1980s British indie pop and 4AD-era dream pop. Subsequent records, including Nocturne, brought cleaner production and more prominent synthesizers without losing the reverb-heavy atmosphere. Tatum records largely on his own and assembles a band for live performances.
