New Jersey band from the turn-of-the-millennium nu-metal wave, trading in downtuned riffs and shouted-to-sung dynamics — reactivated years after the fact.

40 Below Summer formed in New Jersey in 1998 and became part of the wave of nu metal and alternative metal bands signed in the years either side of 2000. Fronted by vocalist Max Illidge, whose delivery moved between roaring and sung passages, the band paired heavily downtuned guitars with samples and electronic texture on the albums Invitation and The Mourning After.

The group broke up in the mid-2000s and has reappeared in various configurations since. Illidge died in 2020.
