AC Slater is the alias of Los Angeles producer and DJ Ricky Mears, who came up through the American breaks and electro-house scene before settling into the bass-house sound he is now attached to. His records lean on UK garage swing, clipped vocal chops and low end that carries the track, with more attention paid to the weight of a bassline than to melody.
He runs Night Bass, the label and club night he founded to give that sound a home in the States, releasing his own material alongside a roster of producers working in bass house and jackin house. The night has toured as a package, and the label's compilations collect much of the scene it helped organise.
