Ado
Japan's masked vocal phenomenon — an anonymous silhouette with a voice that swings from guttural growl to glass-shattering belt, performing chart-conquering J-pop from behind a screen.
Ado grew up in Tokyo, where she discovered Niconico videos on a Nintendo 3DS in 2014 and was struck by cover singers who performed without showing their faces. She began posting her own vocal covers as an utaite in 2017, recording inside a closet she had lined with soundproofing foam.
She signed to Universal Music Japan's Virgin Music label and released 'Usseewa', written by a Vocaloid producer, the day before her eighteenth birthday in 2020. The song topped the Oricon digital and streaming charts and the Billboard Japan Hot 100, reaching 100 million plays within seventeen weeks, the sixth-fastest climb on record and a mark no other solo singer had reached so young.
Her songs are largely written and produced by figures from the Vocaloid scene, pairing rock instrumentation with dense electronic arrangement, and she performs as a silhouette or through animated visuals rather than showing her face. In 2022 she sang 'New Genesis', the theme song for One Piece Film: Red, which topped Apple Music's Global Top 100 chart.
Ado toured internationally in the years that followed while keeping her identity hidden. Her 2025 Hibana World Tour has been credited as the largest global tour by a Japanese artist.
