Alanis Morissette is a Canadian singer and songwriter who began her career as a teenage pop performer in Ottawa before relocating and reinventing her sound. Her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill, written with producer Glen Ballard, sold in enormous numbers and produced songs including "You Oughta Know", "Ironic" and "Hand in My Pocket".
Her writing is direct and conversational, often built on long lines crammed against the melody, and her delivery moves between quiet phrasing and full-voiced release. Later albums, among them Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, took a more introspective turn, and she has continued recording and touring since.
