As It Is
Brighton pop-punk that took a hard theatrical turn into emo concept records and never really came back — eyeliner-era drama played completely straight.
As It Is formed in Brighton in 2012 around American-born vocalist Patty Walters, who had first found an audience posting covers online. Signed to Fearless Records, the band began with bright, melodic pop-punk before moving toward darker and more conceptual material, most obviously on The Great Depression, a themed record accompanied by a stark black, white and red visual identity and a heavy debt to mid-2000s emo. Later releases pushed further into harder, more theatrical territory. The band is known for treating that drama earnestly rather than ironically, with Walters's high, clearly enunciated vocal lines carrying most of the weight.
