BoDeans

1 festival played

Wisconsin roots-rock band built on the vocal blend of Kurt Neumann and Sam Llanas, with a heartland catalogue reaching back to the mid-80s — 'Closer to Free' later found a second life as a TV theme.

The BoDeans formed in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in the early 1980s around the songwriting partnership of Kurt Neumann and Sam Llanas, whose intertwined lead vocals became the band's defining feature. Their 1986 debut, Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams, was produced by T Bone Burnett and set out the group's mix of heartland rock, rockabilia rhythm and close harmony singing.

"Closer to Free," from the 1993 album Go Slow Down, reached a much larger audience when it was used as the theme to the television series Party of Five. Llanas left the band in 2011; Neumann has continued to lead the BoDeans since.
