Cheap Trick formed in Rockford, Illinois in the early 1970s around guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson, with Robin Zander on lead vocals and Bun E. Carlos originally on drums. Their sound joined hard rock guitar to Beatles-influenced melody, an approach that helped define American power pop, and their late-1970s success in Japan produced a live album recorded at the Nippon Budokan that broke them in the United States. Songs including "Surrender", "I Want You to Want Me" and "Dream Police" remain the core of their live set. Nielsen is known for his large collection of custom guitars, among them multi-neck instruments. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
