Squeeze formed in south-east London in 1974, built around the songwriting partnership of lyricist Chris Difford and composer Glenn Tilbrook. Emerging alongside the new wave, they wrote compact pop songs about ordinary English life — pubs, bedsits, failing marriages, dead-end jobs — set to unusually sophisticated melodies and harmonised vocals. Jools Holland played keyboards in early line-ups.
Their run of late-1970s and early-1980s singles, among them "Cool for Cats", "Up the Junction" and "Tempted", made them a fixture of British radio. The band has broken up and reformed more than once, with Difford and Tilbrook remaining the constant pairing.
