Luísa Sonza
A Brazilian pop star who turned a very public personal life into some of the country's sharpest, most confrontational recent pop.
Luísa Gerloff Sonza, born July 18, 1998, grew up in Tuparendi, Rio Grande do Sul, and began singing at seven at a local Gaucho folklore community centre. She was later hired as a child performer by the group Sol Maior, staying with them for a decade and playing as many as 24 concerts a month.
In 2014 she launched a YouTube channel built around cover songs, earning the nickname "Queen of Covers" and wider visibility by 2016. She signed with Universal Music Group in 2017, releasing the single "Good Vibes," before moving into original material and issuing her debut album, Pandora, in 2018.
Her records draw on Brazilian pop, funk carioca and electronic production, and her songwriting has repeatedly engaged with her own public life, including her marriage to Whindersson Nunes and the scrutiny that followed. Her second album, Doce 22, arrived in 2021 after she took a break from social media over online attacks.
That year she also appeared on a remix of Katy Perry's "Cry About It Later" with Bruno Martini. She signed with Sony Music Brazil in 2022 and released her third album, Escândalo Íntimo, in 2023, featuring a collaboration with Demi Lovato on "Penhasco2." She has also acted on Brazilian television and co-hosts the HBO Max show Queen Stars with Pabllo Vittar.
