West-of-Ireland dream-pop — mist, radio static, and 4AD hush, Connemara landscape rendered as sound, songs that drift in like weather.

Maria Somerville grew up in Connemara, where she learned to sing through her father and uncles and picked up guitar from her older brother. She first drew notice in 2013 after uploading songs to the site BreakingTunes, which led to more shows and wider exposure.

She self-released her debut album, All My People, in 2019, a record of slow, reverb-heavy songs built from guitar, synth and layered vocals, sung in both English and Irish. She is now based between Connemara and Dublin.

She later signed to 4AD, a label whose ambient-leaning dream-pop lineage her work sits comfortably within, releasing her third album, Luster, in April 2025. Written in a house on the banks of Lough Corrib, it folds in shoegaze and post-punk alongside ambient textures and centres on returning to Connemara after years away studying sound engineering in Dublin; the album drew wide critical praise, including an 8.5 rating and a Best New Music tag from Pitchfork.

Somerville also works as a DJ and radio presenter, hosting shows on NTS Radio since 2019 and, from 2021, The Early Bird Show, mixing Irish folk forms with ambient music, dream pop, spoken word and field recordings. She has named fellow Irish artists Katie Kim, Róisín Berkley and Sinéad O'Connor among her influences, alongside Grouper, My Bloody Valentine and Patrick Gallagher.
