Meryl Streek is the alias of a Dublin musician who released the album 796 in 2022, its title referring to the infant remains associated with the Tuam mother and baby home. The records combine spoken and shouted vocals with sampled speech, electronic percussion and post-punk guitar, addressing institutional abuse in Ireland, emigration, class and grief in blunt terms.
The delivery is closer to declamation than singing, and the arrangements borrow as much from industrial and electronic music as from punk. Live, Meryl Streek performs with backing tracks and samples, a format that has drawn attention across Ireland and the UK.
