Charlotte's sprawling art-punk outfit — jittery synth-flecked post-punk with barked, absurdist vocals, in the proud lineage of The Fall.
Patois Counselors is a band from Charlotte, North Carolina, formed in 2015 and led by Bo White, previously of the punk group Brain F≠. The line-up is larger than most punk outfits, pairing synthesizers and saxophone with the usual guitars and rhythm section, and its members have also played in Yardwork, Paint Fumes, Lofidels, Calabi Yau, Moenda and Curiosidades de Bombrile.
The music combines nervy post-punk rhythms with cheap-sounding keyboards and White's clipped, deadpan vocal delivery, which favours wordy, sardonic observation over melody. Their records have appeared on the Ever/Never label, which has released four studio albums, a live-in-studio recording and an EP by the band.
Patois Counselors have shared bills with bands such as Protomartyr, Pile, Wednesday, Automatic and Quintron & Miss Pussycat, placing them within a broader post-punk and garage-rock circuit that also includes Gustaf, Omni and Ceremony.
