Texas Hippie Coalition came together in Denison, Texas in 2004, fronted by Big Dad Ritch, whose gravel-throated delivery and outsized stage persona are central to the band's identity. Their music sits at the meeting point of Southern rock, stoner rock and heavy metal: down-tuned, groove-heavy riffing under lyrics about drinking, driving and Texas itself. The band has kept up a steady output of albums and near-constant touring on the American hard rock circuit, and "red dirt metal" has stuck as the shorthand for what they do.
