Craig Finn and guitarist Tad Kubler formed The Hold Steady in Brooklyn in 2003, having previously played together in the Minneapolis band Lifter Puller. Finn's lyrics follow a loose cast of recurring characters through Twin Cities parties, Catholic guilt and bad decisions, and he tends to talk his way through verses before the band lands on a chorus.
The arrangements lean on classic-rock guitar, with Franz Nicolay's piano and accordion a feature of the earlier records. "Boys and Girls in America" and "Stay Positive" are the albums most often cited, and the band plays multi-night residencies it calls Massive Nights.
