The National came together in Brooklyn in 1999 from a group of Cincinnati friends: Matt Berninger singing, twin brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner on guitars and arrangements, and brothers Scott and Bryan Devendorf on bass and drums. Bryan Devendorf's drumming rarely settles into a straight backbeat, which gives even the quiet songs a forward push.
"Boxer" and "High Violet" brought them a wider audience, with "Fake Empire" and "Bloodbuzz Ohio" becoming set staples. Berninger writes with his wife Carin Besser, and Aaron Dessner has produced and co-written for other artists, including Taylor Swift's "Folklore". The Dessners also run the Eaux Claires and Haven festivals.
