The Paper Kites

1 festival played

Melbourne group dealing in hushed, reverb-soft folk built for late hours — patient songwriting that trusts quiet to do the work.

The Paper Kites formed in Melbourne in 2010 around songwriter and singer Sam Bentley, building an early following on the strength of the EPs Woodland and Young North before moving to full-length records. Their music sits between folk and indie rock, with layered guitars, close harmonies and arrangements that tend to hold back rather than build to obvious peaks.

Later albums have widened the palette somewhat, taking in slower, night-leaning material and collaborations with other singers, but the core approach has stayed consistent. Songs such as "Bloom" have found a long second life through streaming, and the band has toured internationally well beyond Australia.
