The Rasmus
Finnish rock veterans who broke internationally with 'In the Shadows' after years of funk-inflected work at home — three decades of goth-tinged arena hooks.
The Rasmus formed in Helsinki in 1994, with Lauri Ylönen on vocals. Their first records leaned on funk rock and pop and were largely a Finnish concern; the sound darkened considerably over the following decade, moving toward a gothic-tinged alternative rock built on minor-key melodies and big choruses.
The 2003 album Dead Letters and its single "In the Shadows" broke the band across Europe and beyond, and remains the song most listeners know them by. They have continued recording and touring since, and represented Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2022.
