The Wildhearts
Ginger Wildheart's chaotic marriage of Beatles melody and Metallica volume — a genuinely beloved British institution, survived against all odds.
The Wildhearts formed in Newcastle in 1989 around singer, guitarist and songwriter Ginger, who has led the band through numerous line-up changes and several breakups and reunions. Their debut album Earth vs the Wildhearts appeared in 1993, followed by P.H.U.Q. and a string of records and EPs across the following decades.
The band's music combines pop and power-pop melody with the volume and density of hard rock and metal, often shifting between the two within a single song, alongside a strain of dark humour in the lyrics. They became a fixture of the British rock scene of the 1990s and retained a devoted following through long periods of label trouble and internal upheaval.
