Brainfeeder-schooled producer whose beats stayed warm and melodic while the LA scene got colder — beat-scene royalty with a survivor's story.

TOKiMONSTA is Jennifer Lee, born in 1987 and raised in Torrance, California, the daughter of a Korean American mother who ran a small business and put her through classical piano lessons. She graduated from UC Irvine, where she began producing on Fruity Loops before moving to Ableton, and cut her teeth in beat cyphers at Leimert Park's Project Blowed and Low End Theory.

After being laid off from a video game industry job during the recession, Lee pursued music full time and attended the Red Bull Music Academy in London in 2010. That year she became the first woman signed to Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder label, releasing her debut album, Midnight Menu, and was named LA Weekly's top Los Angeles female DJ.

Her music combines instrumental hip-hop rhythms with melodic, often lush harmonic writing, drawing on soul, R&B and house, and she frequently works with guest vocalists alongside her instrumental material. She has released the EP Creature Dreams and albums including Half Shadows, Desiderium, put out on her own label Young Art Records, and Lune Rouge, and has produced or collaborated with Anderson .Paak, EarthGang, Isaiah Rashad, Selah Sue and ZHU, alongside official remixes for artists such as Beck, Disclosure and Sia.

In the mid-2010s she was treated for moyamoya disease, a rare cerebrovascular condition, and temporarily lost her ability to process music and language while recovering from brain surgery, an experience she has spoken about publicly and which shaped the album she made afterward, Lune Rouge. That album earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album, making her the first female Asian-American producer nominated in the category.

She was profiled in the 2020 documentary Underplayed, which addressed diversity in the electronic dance music industry. Her stage name combines the Korean word for rabbit, tokki, with a colloquial spelling of 'monster,' reflecting music she describes as moving between quiet delicacy and loud, disturbing beauty.
