USHKA is the DJ name of Thanu Yakupitiyage, who was born in Sri Lanka, raised in Thailand, and is based in Brooklyn. She works outside music as a communications strategist in immigrant rights and climate advocacy, and the two strands of her work overlap: she has been involved in organising parties and collectives that centre South Asian and wider diasporic artists in New York nightlife. Her sets move between bass-weighted club styles, dancehall and soca rhythms, and South Asian source material, generally built for sustained dancing rather than peak-and-drop structures.
